You’re staying near Leidse Square. After breakfast, you take a short walk on the Leidsestraat, or take the tram if you don’t feel like walking with your luggage. Within a few minutes you are on the Herengracht in front of The Vault, where you can cheaply drop off your bags for the day (from €4 to €10).

Baggage storage on the ring of canals

The Vault is an old safe from the Dutch ABN AMRO bank. The monumental building currently houses a group of independent co-workers, but in the basement the old vault is still intact, big safe-door included.

You leave your luggage and walk outside. That almost felt too easy.

Your day without luggage

In the back of your head you hear the voice of your mother, asking you why you haven’t brought her a gift from Amsterdam. You see that the Kalverstraat is right around the corner and a heavy weight lifts off your shoulders (literally, since your bags are now safely in the Vault, HA). The Kalverstraat is the main shopping street in the center, which runs roughly from Dam Square to Muntplein.

If you don’t like the Kalverstraat, within walking distance you find ‘The Nine Streets’ which is full of specialty stores where you can do some vintage shopping. Some people can find shopping a bit of a drag, but the cozy little shops on the ring of canals even give the bleakest shopper some color. Your mother will be very pleased with you.

The rest of the day just opened up for you. And conveniently you are right in the center of Amsterdam.

Luggage pick-up

At the end of the afternoon you walk back to the Herengracht. The guard holding the spear lets you in, he watched over your bags the entire day. When you leave the Vault with your luggage, right in front of the door you see a tram stop. The tram takes you to Amsterdam Central Station within ten minutes, and with that you are a bit closer to home.
